размещение кластеров, выделенных для записи данного файла, не последовательно друг за другом, а в различных местах жёсткого или гибкого диска (фрагментами). Эта ситуация возникает в процессе работы системы, когда в пул свободной дисковой памяти возвращаются кластеры из-под удалённых с диска файлов. Так как файлы разной длины, то последовательной цепочки свободных кластеров может не хватить для записи нового файла и тогда он записывается в разных местах. Фрагментация снижает скорость считывания файла с диска из-за большего числа операций позиционирования головок диска и поиска секторов; кроме того, затрудняется процесс восстановления таблиц распределения кластеров (FAT) и каталогов диска в случае сбоев. Для борьбы с фрагментацией используется, например, утилита из пакета Norton UtilitiesАнгло-русский толковый словарь терминов и сокращений по ВТ, Интернету и программированию. > file fragmentation
